Anthony J. Gillam

Mannheim 1914 and the Interned Russians

After his work on Ostende 1906 (published 2005 by Caissa Editions, see www.chesscafe.com/text/review529.pdf) this is the second "big" tournament book by A.J. Gillam. (Some may have lost track of all his smaller publications, you can find them at www.chessbooks.co.uk/Chessplayer.html.)

The author has already described the relevant contents of the book in his announcement (from May 2014), and still more is to find in Brian Almeida’s recent review at ChessCafe.com The Truth is Out There. Altogether I can only agree: the wealth of new information, along with hundreds of unearthed games and rare photographs offer a true treasure trove for historically interested chess friends. And it is Tony Gillam's credit (and that of his collaborators – we have to mention here first and foremost the German author Stefan Haas who published a book on Mannheim 1914 in the previous year) that we can now learn so much about the fate and the chess activities of some prominent masters during WWI – above all Alekhine and Bogoljubow.
Unfortunately some of the (smaller) photographs in the book are very grainy or fuzzy (also pointed out by Tony Gillam), and it is always the question if you should still include such photos (I would prefer to omit them). But this point doesn’t seriously affect the overall excellent impression. The enormous research work and efforts put into this book are worthy of the highest praise. Best you buy the book!

PS (17-09-2014):
- A.J.Gillam's commentary concerning the above linked review by Brian Almeida: The Review of Mannheim 1914 and the Interned Russians
- Hans Ree read A.J.Gillam's Mannheim 1914 and the Interned Russians, see NIC 2014/6, p.96-100 - "The Great Folly".

Jimmy Adams

Mikhail Chigorin

The Creative Chess Genius

We are very pleased to hear about a further excellent biography of one of the chess greats (predominantly) of the 19th century: After 29 years our member Jimmy Adams has released a second, significantly enlarged edition of the games collection Mikhail Chigorin - The Creative Chess Genius (Caissa Editions, 1987). Compared to that first edition (of 292 pages), the second has more than additional 450 pages. Not only 100 further games have been added, also the biographical part has been largely expanded. You will find more details as well as an excerpt from the book on the site of the publisher.

In this context I would also like to mention Jimmy Adams’ article portraying "Mikhail Chigorin, the father of Russian chess", just published in New In Chess 1/2016, p.44-55. Worth reading!

The Mitteilungen of the German ex-libris Society (Deutsche Exlibris-Gesellschaft = DEG), issue 2013 - 1 is meanwhile available.

This tasteful DEG periodical is a magazine of fine quality (colour printing on glossy paper, A4 format; published two to three times per year), and to me it seems exemplarily designed for a club magazine of a culturally oriented society. The lavishly illustrated current issue of 28 pp. contains inter alia a contribution by Eva Masthoff on the Haltern Chess Exhibition mentioning also the KWA and a few of their members (p.17f.).
You will get an impression from the free online version (PDF file), but naturally the printed edition is recommendable for collectors. The price is 6 € per copy incl. postage (certainly in Germany only), please see the imprint for contacts.

By the way, I just learned that the a.m. exhibition has been extended until end of April 2013, so there is still a chance to pay a visit to Haltern’s public library (see www.buecherfreunde-haltern.de/).

Who has never heard of "The Chess Player, Nottingham" – meanwhile a one-man show of our friend Tony Gillam – "Hunter of the Lost Games". Uncounted – in the very meaning of the word – are all his chess publications; a good insight into Tony’s productivity, but also into his "ups and downs" is given in Sarah Hurst’s article in "Curse of Kirsan, Russell Enterprises 2002"; also "CHESS, July 1999". With "Munich 1942" I have chosen one of Tony’s recent works to which I personally attach considerable significance.

Harrie H. Grondijs

No Rook Unturned

A tour around the Saavedra study

Rijswijk: Author’s edition, 2004. 361 p., hardcover

The Dutch study expert Harrie Grondijs has caught much attention in his field with numerous profound publications (both books and articles). One of his recent works is No Rook Unturned. A Tour Around The Saavedra Study which was published in a very small edition of only 30 copies. It is already indicated by the subtitle that this book completely deals with the famous Saavedra study – Günter Büsing supplied a detailed review and appreciation of this fascinating work in Die Schwalbe (no. 207, June 2004, p. 469-470). Remarkably, this book initiated further research on the early history of the helpmate, shortly afterward the reviewer and the author presented the result in a joint article (Günter Büsing, Harrie Grondijs: Die dritte Erfindung des Hilfsmatts [The third discovery of the helpmate]; Die Schwalbe 209, Oct. 2004, p. 537-542).

(R.B.)

Here a list of Harrie Grondijs' Publications (updated 16/03/2010).

The site https://booksofsort.nl presents a complete overview of publications, so far, written by and/or edited by Harrie Grondijs.

Øystein Brekke, our Norwegian member, has informed us about a further anniversary book he has written and which was published already last year.

This book with the title "Norske sjakktrekk" (Norwegian chess moves) was released on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Norwegian Chess Federation in July 2014, so exactly 1 year ago. It contains a general history of chess in Norway through all ages, naturally with a certain focus on the background of the founding of the Norwegian Chess Federation (on 20 July 1914), and the further development of chess in this country (which, for well-known reasons, has exploded over the past years).

The book met with a very positive, partly enthusiastic reception, and the author kindly offers a 20% discount to KWA members.

More details at Øystein Brekke's chess shop!

Other chess books from his pen are included in the section Publications of Our Members.
